What Did Students Do?:
We had an amazing 2School experience this past week. The cold weather did not keep us from exploring and learning in the downtown beltline. This experience provided us the opportunity to learn so much and to explore the CBE and our city from the perspectives of many different people. Ms. Montgomery was our teacher and guide throughout the week and we learned so much from her vast knowledge.
We were examining the question, “How do we create welcoming and inclusive communities?” We examined this from multiple perspectives in many different places.
Students reflected and wrote frequently from different perspectives and different points of view on topics ranging from park space, to public art, to architecture. Many are becoming very proficient at looking at various issues from different perspectives.
Just as a quick synopsis, here are the various people and places we took in:
• Historical classroom at the Education Centre
• Future of learning lab at the Education Centre
• Skyline viewing from the 8th floor of the Education Centre
• Guest speaker from The Mustard Seed
• Multiple community walks examining architecture of the Beltline
• Public art
• Rode the C-Train!
• Devonian Gardens
• Q and A with Trustee May
• CBE Board of Trustees meeting room
• Indigenous plant life and medicines
• Central Library of the Calgary Public Library
We will continue to build upon this work in the weeks ahead as we explore the community of Lake Bonavista from different perspectives. We will be heading back downtown on June 1st to make up for our missed snow day and to give closure to our study.
Family Connections
Ask your child:
-What were three highlights from your week?
-What was the lens or perspective your group was given when you explored the Central Library? How did the library meet their needs?
-What is your answer to our question, How do we create welcoming and inclusive communities within the CBE and The City of Calgary?
