Blog Post 13 Nov. 21st - 24th Learning Outcomes Social Studies - Students  Value Canada's physical geography and natural environment Examine, critically, the physical geography of Canada by exploring and reflecting on the following: What are the major geographical regions in Canada? What Did Students Do? Last week students were introduced to the six major geographical regions in Canada.  These are the Arctic Region, the Cordillera Region, the Interior Plains Region, the Great Lakes Region, the Atlantic Region, and the Canadian Shield Region.  They have now labeled and coloured a map of the regions.  This week students were assigned to a region and began to research the provinces included in their region, the climate in their region, the physical features and geography of their region and the natural resources of their region.  They are using the online grade 5 textbook to do their initial research.  Moving forward, students will be sharing their research with the class and we will
Blog Post 12 Nov. 14th - 18th Learning Outcomes Science: Describe the living and nonliving components of a wetland ecosystem and the interactions within and among them. -Identify the roles of different organisms in the food web of a pond: Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers -Draw diagrams of food chains and food webs What Did Students Do? Students learned about producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, and decomposers.  They created a visual journal page listing characteristics of each. They began to explore different types of food chains and some students have started to create visual journal pages around these.    Family Connections Ask students about producers, consumers, and decomposers.  Have them provide examples. Blog Post 11 Nov. 7th - 10th Learning Outcomes English Language Arts: Experience Various Texts -describe and discuss new places, times, characters, and events encountered in oral, print, and other media texts Construct Meaning from Text -describe characters' qualities based on what they say and do and how they are described in oral, print, and other media texts What Did Students Do? Students began novel studies this week. They read with the teacher and in small groups, focusing on the Fab 4 reading strategies: summarize, predict, clarify, and question. After reading and discussing their novel, students reflected on what they had read and then recorded their ideas. They used a rubric to help them thoroughly summarize with identifying the main events, characters, and setting.  Family Connections Ask your child: -What novel are you reading? -Can you summarize what you have read so far? October 31 - November 4 Blog Post 10 Learning Outcomes Describe and apply mental mathematic strategies to determine basic multiplication facts to 9 x 9 Demonstrate an understanding of multiplication (2 or 3 digit by 1 digit) to solve problems by: -using personal strategies for multiplication with and without concrete materials  -using arrays to represent multiplication -connecting concrete representations to symbolic representations What Did Students Do? Students represented multiplication in various ways using concrete materials.  They then recorded ways to represent multiplication in their journals.  Students were engaged in activities learning to multiply both single digits, as well a two or three digits by one digit.  Family Connections Ask your child to show you how to multiply one digit by two or three digits.   Ask your child to play a multiplication game with you to reinforce their multiplication skills. While driving in the car, try skip counting with various numbers - each pe
