What Did Students Do?

Students began novel studies this week. They read with the teacher and in small groups, focusing on the Fab 4 reading strategies: summarize, predict, clarify, and question. After reading and discussing their novel, students reflected on what they had read and then recorded their ideas. They used a rubric to help them thoroughly summarize with identifying the main events, characters, and setting.

Family Connections

Ask your child:

-What novel are you reading?

-Can you summarize what you have read so far? What are the main events that have happened? Who are the main characters and what are they like? Where and when is this story taking place?

-What do you think will happen next?

-Were there any words that were tricky to figure out? What strategy did you use to read them? What strategies did you use to learn the meaning of the word?

-What questions do you have about your book?

-What does this book make you think of?

**Please Note: These are strategies to use and questions to ask your child about any text they are reading. We are focusing on specific novels at school but you can use these same strategies and questions at home with any text!

I Can Statements (Each student can...)

I can summarize what I read, including the events, characters, and setting.

I can clarify words by using strategies, like .....

I can predict what will happen next.

I can ask questions about what I read.

I can connect this story to my life, other text, or the world.

FYI

Students use their Google Classroom often in class. These online classrooms have learning tools, assignments, and assessment criteria. Please have your child show you their Google Classroom and explain the different materials in them. These online classrooms are a great way for students to support their learning at school as well as to share their learning with you at home.

To support your child's learning at home, you can go through their Google Classroom, have them read (independently or with you) for about 20 minutes each evening, and practice basic math facts. For math, we are working on multiplication so if you would like to practice with your child to improve their understanding, recall, and application of multiplication up to 9 x 9, that would be great.

Blog Post 3 September 12th - 16th We had another great week in grade five. It was our first full week and went by so quickly! Learning Outcomes English Language Arts: Create Original Text Generate ideas to use texts from listening, reading, and viewing experiences as models for producing own oral, print, and other media texts What Did Students Do? The grade five students are organizing and putting on the Terry Fox Run. To do this, they have done a great deal of research about Terry Fox and the "why" behind the run. Students have read books, listened to stories, and watched videos to learn about Terry Fox. With that information, they have taken notes, shared school wide announcements, and created posters. We discussed different ways to share information and students identified talking, signing, writing, pictures, and more as ways to do this. They determined that when sharing information, it needs to be clear and interesting. They then created a target to ensure their posters w...
