September 19 - 22

We had an amazing week in grade five.  Our Terry Fox run was a great success!

Learning Outcome:

Use talk, notes, personal writing, and representing to summarize relationships among own ideas and those found in texts.

What did students do?:

The grade five students have been reading books, watching videos, and taking part in discussions about Terry Fox over the past few weeks.  They have created visual journal pages and posters recording and sharing the information they have gathered.  Students then used their research to write paragraphs about Terry Fox.  We used the hamburger graphic organizer to discuss how to write a paragraph.  They then used their facts to write their sentences and paragraphs.

What Did Students Do?:

Students collected the Terry Fox donations this week.  They worked together to estimate, make charts, and count the money together.  They then calculated the difference between our school goal and the amount donated.

  Blog Post 37 June 12-16 Learning Outcomes Math  Topic: Shape and Space  Outcomes:  demonstrate an understanding of volume  demonstrate an understanding of capacity   What Did  Students Do? This week, students participated in a hands on activity to learn about volume and capacity. Students had the opportunity to estimate how many millilitres (mL) or litres (L) a container held. They used referents to help them estimate each container's capacity, such as 250mL/1 cup or the visual of a 2L milk carton. With the support of the teacher, students then filled each container with water to determine what the capacity was and compare it to their estimate.  The second activity students completed was to estimate the volume of various boxes. Students learned how to calculate volume and reviewed how to multiply multiple numbers. Students used referents to help with their estimation, such as using a pinkie finger to represent a centimetre. Blog Post 35 May 29 - June 2 Learning Outcomes Math Demonstrate an understanding of decimals by using concrete, pictorial, and symbolic representations to create sets of equivalent fractions and compare fractions with like and unlike denominators.    What Did  Students Do? This week, students worked on comparing fractions using a variety of strategies including cross multiplication, division, and drawing rectangles.   They used dice and dominos to create and compare fractions and some of them had a chance to play Fraction Golf.  Ask Your Child: What is an equivalent fraction?
