We had an amazing week in grade five.  Our Terry Fox run was a great success!

Learning Outcome:

Use talk, notes, personal writing, and representing to summarize relationships among own ideas and those found in texts.

What did students do?:

The grade five students have been reading books, watching videos, and taking part in discussions about Terry Fox over the past few weeks.  They have created visual journal pages and posters recording and sharing the information they have gathered.  Students then used their research to write paragraphs about Terry Fox.  We used the hamburger graphic organizer to discuss how to write a paragraph.  They then used their facts to write their sentences and paragraphs.

Family Connections:

Ask your child:

- What are the parts of a paragraph?

- What facts about Terry Fox are you sharing in your paragraph?

Learning Outcome:

Add and subtract within 1 000 000

What Did Students Do?:

Students collected the Terry Fox donations this week.  They worked together to estimate, make charts, and count the money together.  They then calculated the difference between our school goal and the amount donated.

Family Connections:

Ask your child:

- how did you calculate the amount of money?

- did you reach your school goal?

- how do you feel about the amount of money that has been donated?

- how much do you think we will raise all together?

What Did Students Do? We met together as a large group and read the first chapter of the book, The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes.  We then discussed our task of creating a podcast based on our summaries of the chapters of the book.  Mrs. Sampson gave students an example of a podcast summary to show them what was expected of them.  She then played her sample podcast and students shared feedback on what was good and what could be done to improve the podcast.  "You should read more quickly at the beginning so it doesn't sound creepy."  That was definitely a favourite suggestion and the student wasn't wrong.  After all feedback was given and it was determined that Mrs. Sampson shoul...

Students participated in creating a five minute drama presentation about extreme weather for Room 8 and Electricity for Room 7 with our Trickster, Tyrone.  The week began by playing games and making different "shapes."  All of our different "shapes" were then put up and we voted on the ones we liked the best. Tyrone led students in creating the story around them.  Students acted out the story with lots of enthusiasm and energy.  They gave suggestions and took direction throughout the process. What an amazing week with Trickster.  We were very proud of the performances they gave!  Ask Your Child: -What was the goal you set this week for Trickster? -How do you feel about the performance you gave? -What was your favourite part of the week?  -What would you change if you were th...

Students are working towards creating burglar alarms by adding buzzers to their circuits.  They have been provided with many different materials and a problem.  They need to create an alarm that goes off when a door is opened.  Students have been working in groups to create their alarms.  This has been a tricky task for them as they all know how to create an alarm that goes off when a door is closed but being opened is a whole different thing.  We will complete this task in the coming week.  This is definitely building perseverance as we work throug...
