Blog Post 2

September 1st - September 9th

In grade five, we have had a great start to the year! We have focused on building positive relationships and community.

Learning Outcomes:

Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills.

What Did Students Do?

To demonstrate that each one of us is unique and has something significant to contribute to our group, we did a task with sand. Students poured a small cup of coloured sand into a glass vase while sharing one important quality about themselves that will make our classroom a great community. We discussed how this sand represents our beautiful and unique selves joined together as a whole. We also recognized how we have lasting impacts on one another. Then, they represented these ideas in their visual journals.

Family Connections:

Ask your child

-what quality they shared with their class.

-what colour sand they used and why.

-what qualities we decided are important in our grade five community.

Learning Outcomes:

Construct meaning from texts - support own interpretations of oral, print, and other media texts, using evidence from personal experiences and the texts.

What Did Students Do?

We have a school-wide text called "Finding Muchness" by Kobi Yamada. We read the story and discussed each page from the book. Then students chose their favourite quote that resonated with them. After thinking about the quote, they made connections to it. They thought about something they have done in the past that connects to this quote, someone it makes them think of, goals for the future, and more.

Family Connections:

Ask your child

-what quote they chose.

-why they like this quote.

-what connections that can make to their quote.

Reminders

We will start designing and creating vision boards this week based on this school-wide text. Please have your child start collecting materials to add to their vision board. Materials can include magazine pictures, cards, fabric, small pieces of nature, photos, etc. These will be vision boards for our grade five year and will be academic and personal.

Students participated in creating a five minute drama presentation about extreme weather for Room 8 and Electricity for Room 7 with our Trickster, Tyrone.  The week began by playing games and making different "shapes."  All of our different "shapes" were then put up and we voted on the ones we liked the best. Tyrone led students in creating the story around them.  Students acted out the story with lots of enthusiasm and energy.  They gave suggestions and took direction throughout the process. What an amazing week with Trickster.  We were very proud of the performances they gave!  Ask Your Child: -What was the goal you set this week for Trickster? -How do you feel about the performance you gave? -What was your favourite part of the week?  -What would you change if you were the director? -Would you l

Blog Post 37 June 12-16 Learning Outcomes Math  Topic: Shape and Space  Outcomes:  demonstrate an understanding of volume  demonstrate an understanding of capacity   What Did  Students Do? This week, students participated in a hands on activity to learn about volume and capacity. Students had the opportunity to estimate how many millilitres (mL) or litres (L) a container held. They used referents to help them estimate each container's capacity, such as 250mL/1 cup or the visual of a 2L milk carton. With the support of the teacher, students then filled each container with water to determine what the capacity was and compare it to their estimate.  The second activity students completed was to estimate the volume of various boxes. Students learned how to calculate volume and reviewed how to multiply multiple numbers. Students used referents to help with their estimation, such as using a pinkie finger to represent a centimetre. After estimation, students used a ruler to measure the l

This week, students worked on comparing fractions using a variety of strategies including cross multiplication, division, and drawing rectangles.   They used dice and dominos to create and compare fractions and some of them had a chance to play Fraction Golf.  Ask Your Child: What is an equivalent fraction?
