Learning Outcomes

Wellness:

Demonstrate respect for the contributions and perspectives of others when working together or make decisions or achieve team goals.

Students acknowledge and connect perspectives of self and others through communication and listening skills.

What Did Students Do?

Students focused on collaborating and compromising! They worked in random groups to practice some math skills, descriptive writing, and art. Each group worked with three pumpkins to measure, estimate, describe, design, and carve. This afternoon was focused on sharing ideas, listening to the ideas of others, and working together for a common plan.

Family Connections

Ask your child:

-how they contributed to the group?

-how they included others in the group?

-what was successful when working in the group?

-what was challenging about working in the group?

Blog Post 3 September 12th - 16th We had another great week in grade five. It was our first full week and went by so quickly! Learning Outcomes English Language Arts: Create Original Text Generate ideas to use texts from listening, reading, and viewing experiences as models for producing own oral, print, and other media texts What Did Students Do? The grade five students are organizing and putting on the Terry Fox Run. To do this, they have done a great deal of research about Terry Fox and the "why" behind the run. Students have read books, listened to stories, and watched videos to learn about Terry Fox. With that information, they have taken notes, shared school wide announcements, and created posters. We discussed different ways to share information and students identified talking, signing, writing, pictures, and more as ways to do this. They determined that when sharing information, it needs to be clear and interesting. They then created a target to ensure their posters w...

What Did Students Do? We met together as a large group and read the first chapter of the book, The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes.  We then discussed our task of creating a podcast based on our summaries of the chapters of the book.  Mrs. Sampson gave students an example of a podcast summary to show them what was expected of them.  She then played her sample podcast and students shared feedback on what was good and what could be done to improve the podcast.  "You should read more quickly at the beginning so it doesn't sound creepy."  That was definitely a favourite suggestion and the student wasn't wrong.  After all feedback was given and it was determined that Mrs. Sampson shoul...

This week, students did their summative assessment for their novels.  They chose a selection of text from their novel and wrote an in depth summary based on events, characters, and setting.  We have worked on many summaries throughout this learning cycle.  This was a chance to share what they have learned.  Students were asked to self assess themselves based on the rubric we have been using over the past few months. We will be finishing our novels over the next few weeks and will start a new reading cycle in January.  Family Connections Ask your child: -What novel have you been readin...
