Describe the properties and interactions of various household liquids and solids, and interpret their interactions
What Did Students Do?
Students took part in an experiment before Spring Break. Their question was, How does vinegar affect the absorption of food dye by hard boiled eggs? They discovered that by increasing the amount of vinegar in their water/dye solution, the eggs absorbed a greater amount of egg dye.
Students then worked in groups to create their own experiment changing one variable in the experiment. They all chose a different liquid to add to their water to see if it would affect the rate of dye absorption. Students wrote their own labs complete with a question, hypothesis, materials, procedure, diagram, observations, and a conclusion.
This was a first step in being able to set up a scientific experiment. This is a skill we will use throughout our work in Classroom Chemistry.
Ask Your Child:
What variable did your group change in your experiment?
What was your original hypothesis?
What was your conclusion?
What were some of the observations that you made during the experiment?
